3 issues in public safety with critical priority
Blight Team week-one operational plan
The Blight Team started work the morning of the meeting, targeting right-of-ways, open dumps, and vacant lot clearing. Actual house demolitions can't start until a $400,000 dozer makes the landfill fully operational around December — and the state may reimburse the city $1,000 per property cleaned up.
Youth violence and opportunity
The Office of Neighborhood Safety presented sobering data: six homicides under age 18 this year, 24%+ unemployment for young Black men, and 12 school-aged overdoses. The office, essentially a staff of one, has served over 280 children and handed out 200 gun locks.
HB 1677 Committee Substitute
The bill would replace Jackson Water with a nine-member authority where Jackson controls six seats and would wipe roughly $200 million in water-sewer debt off the city's books once the system is leased. Supporters call it the best available deal; opponents say it lacks a sunset clause and consumer protections.
